My Story
My journey to business valuation was part preparation and part opportunity…meaning luck, as the quote goes.
Unrelated to business, I was exposed to the construction industry early on. My father was an engineer, managing commercial construction projects with a side hustle building homes. Fascination with how things are made became part of my DNA.
Influenced by this experience, I wanted to be an architect, which to me is one of the perfect marriages of art and science. While I love and appreciate art, I cannot draw – at all. Early on I was persuaded not to pursue architecture.
I was, however, also drawn to business and its multi-faceted elements. The interwoven dynamics of finance, marketing and strategy are another paradigm of joining art and science. I focused on the forward-looking aspects, synthesizing and interpreting information that lead to insightful analysis.
Armed with strong corporate finance experience in a variety of businesses and industries, I started my own consulting practice, to serve my desire to further bring together the art and the science. I focused on both the financial analysis and strategic implications, providing recommendations to address the issues at hand.
I came to business valuation when another business valuation practitioner became my client. My background in financial analysis and strategy was a natural fit. After working on numerous projects, I shifted to business valuation exclusively.
It wasn’t until well into my business valuation career that I heard it is said that business valuation is also both an art and a science. It brings together the interlocking facts and strategy of the business with the experience and judgment of the business valuation practitioner.
While I am not an architect, in the traditional sense, I am an architect of models and analysis, that synthesize facts with professional judgments. Only when these parts come together is the story complete, and that is what I love to deliver to my clients.
